Learn More About Cocaine

Ka whai i te whānuitanga o ngā kōrero mō te Kukarau.

Cocaine, often called coke, crack or snow, is made from the leaves of the coca plant. It is usually a white powder. Crack cocaine is cocaine mixed with other chemicals and turned into crystals.

How it feels

Cocaine make you feel full of energy and wide awake. These good feelings stop after about 15 minutes, and you can start feeling uncomfortable, sad and wanting more. You can also become restless and think people are out to get you.

When you keep using cocaine, the bad feeling will often get worse and can include seeing things that aren’t there, heart problems and no longer being able to have sex.

When you stop using, after a day or so you can get withdrawal symptoms. You may feel angry, sad, very hungry, very tired, not able to sleep well, and wanting to use cocaine again. These feelings can last up to 10 weeks.

Things to look out for

Cocaine is not easy to get in New Zealand and costs a lot. Sometimes people will try to sell you meth instead of cocaine as it is cheaper and easier to make. When you use cocaine you can quickly crave more. You can end up using more cocaine each time to get the same feelings, and using more often.
